The Story of
a Day trip Thursday January 30th was Dottie's TWELFTH birthday. When we asked her what she wanted to do, she said, 'Go to Calais for the day, take my friend Hannah, spend most of the time SHOPPING, and have lunch at BUFFALO GRILL'.
So on Saturday we did. Buffalo Grill is the French idea of an American diner. It covers the best of both worlds by serving American style food cooked by a French chef. before you even order, they bring you each a little bowl of dressed salad as an appetizer, The girls had RIBS (with French Fries, of course), Dad had Steak Haché pommes au four, which is a burger served without a bun, but with a baked potato and a choice of sauces. Mom had an Arizona Burger, which she aid was 'the best burger I ever ate in my entire life'.
Afterwards, of course, we had to take a photo of the girls with the local tame buffalo.
The we moved on to Cité Europe, a vast shopping mall at the entrance to the Channel Tunnel, designed specifically for English day-trip shoppers, with a Hypermarket and lots of fashion shops.
The lights change colour all the time – nice.
Meanwhile, Dad went off in the car to AUCHAN, another hypermarket, for some serious shopping – groceries, wine, things we really need. Why Auchan? we have a Loyalty card. This took four hours. Dad is a serious shopper.
Later, we all met up again at Cité Europe and went to the food court for an evening meal – well, a pizza.
We were now full and fatigued, so it was time to go home.
For once in a lifetime, we got pole position on the ferry – first car out in Dover! just time to take Hannah back to her parents, and then home to collapse into bed.
